The Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) Botswana Chapter hosted members of the media for a press conference on the upcoming World Press Freedom Day. It has been indicated that members of the media across the country will be celebrating the day with a number of activities, including a march and key deliberations on issues affecting the press. Prior to the World Press Freedom Day, there will be a panel discussion related to the theme, supported by Mascom with P50 000.
The 30th-anniversary celebration of World Press Freedom Day is a call to re-center press freedom and independent, pluralistic and diverse media as necessary to enjoy all other human rights. The 2023 theme for the World Press Freedom Day is βShaping a Future of Rights: Freedom of expression as a driver for all other human rights.β
In Botswana, the main celebration will be in Gaborone, but journalists in Francistown and Maun will also have celebrations in their respective places.
MISA says it managed to rope in various sponsors such as Lucara, Mascom, KBL, Three Chiefs Motorcycle club and Red Cross Botswana and HATAB to support the commemorations.
