BTC Employees Corporate Social Investment Movement donates to Bothakga Primary School in Lobatse
Botswana Telecommunications Corporation (BTC) has donated equipment worth over
seventy thousand Pula (P70.000) to Bothakga Primary School’s special unit in Lobatse.
The Bothakga Primary School donation initiative is spearheaded by the BTC Corporate
Social Investment Movement, which is a body that is driven by BTC staff members who
are passionate about giving back to their communities. The school’s special unit has
students with autism, hypertension hyperactivity disorder, down syndrome, speech
problems and cerebral palsy amongst others.
Welcoming guests to the donation handover event, the school Head Teacher, Ms
Veronica Kgosana stated that the hosts were both able and special needs students.
She stated that they are faced with many challenges such as lack of funds for
refurbishment of infrastructures. “The rains that we have been experiencing have
affected some of our classrooms, however due to lack of funds, we have not been able
to refurbish them”, she stated. She thanked BTC for their goodwill and gesture of
donating to the school, adding that it is partnerships such as these that will take
Botswana to greater heights.
Giving an overview of the special needs unit at Bothakga Primary School, the Chief
Education Officer, Mr. Tumelo Monty Rakgabo stated that the school is a catchment
school for areas around Lobatse. Speaking on inclusive education, Mr. Rakgabo stated
that inclusivity means giving education to all children regardless of whether they are
able or disabled. He further stated that the Children’s Act states that every child has a
right to education.
Handing over the donation, the Chairperson of the BTC Corporate Social Investment
Movement and BTC Store Supervisor in Lobatse, Ms Keletso Norwebb stated that “the
Movement seeks to encourage BTC staff members to play a major role in giving back to their communities”. She stated that the donation to Bothakga Primary School’s special needs unit includes four ¾ beds and bedding, four big carpets, three wheelchairs, a laptop and small printer, toys as well as coloring books and crayons for the children.
