HOTCON EXPLORES POTENTIAL OF SPORTS TO SHAPE BOTSWANA’S FUTURE FURTHER

Continuing its commitment to sparking meaningful discussions and fostering thought
leadership, Hotwire hosted the latest edition of its highly regarded HotCon series under the theme,
"Harnessing the Power of Sport in Botswana." Held on 15 November, the event featured a dynamic
panel of experts who delved into the critical intersections of sport, development, and national
identity.
Moderated by sports journalist and curator Leboa “LB” Moroen, the session brought together
thought leaders across various fields, including media, brand management, and sports
administration. Panelists included Neo “Skillo” Aabobe, an award-winning radio and TV personality.
Thuso Palai, Director of Brand Management at Botswana Investment and Trade Centre (BITC) and a
seasoned Public Relations Practitioner; Malebogo Mokgatle, a businesswoman and dedicated sports
mum; and Oabona Dickson Theetso, Vice President of Sports Administration at the Botswana
Athletics Association (BAA).
The panel discussions centered on the transformative potential of sport in uniting communities,
fostering talent and driving Botswana’s economic growth. Key themes included the importance of
equitable resource distribution, parental and corporate support in nurturing talent, and the
promotion of lesser-known sports. The panelists stressed the need for structured development
pathways, from grassroots to elite levels, to bridge gaps in sports management and participation
while showcasing Botswana on a global stage.
Neo Aabobe highlighted the media’s responsibility as a bridge between athletes and the public,
stating, “We are the middlemen connecting athletes, organizations, and their audience. It is crucial
that our narratives build athletes and elevate their opportunities to global platforms.”
Thuso Palai emphasized the importance of leveraging sports as a career pathway, noting, “Sports are
no longer just about fun—they represent livelihoods, employment, and economic growth. It is vital to
instill this mindset in children early on.” Discussions also explored the role of corporate Botswana in
sports development. Palai urged private sector entities to complement government efforts,
stating, “Corporate Botswana must appreciate what sports brings to the table and support athletes
financially, emotionally, and structurally.”
